Berliner: Max Prosa

The "Berliner" mini-interviews are hold to show you a bit more about the people living here, all artists that create the cultural environment in Berlin. With introducing a bit more about the individuals on a more personal level, you might get a deeper understanding of what their work is about.

His lyrics are poems. Amazing Poems

Berlin. In between all those parties, wasted youth and dirty jokes, someone shines like a candle in Carravaggio's paintings and shows the world that Berlin has much more to offer than sex, drug's and artificial music. Germany's youth can feel again. And express it in words. And write some wonderful music to go along. It is springtime 2011 and a whole new era of German folk music is about to begin. Max Prosa is the messenger.

Max grew up in Charlottenburg, Berlin. Right out of school, Max announced a trip to Ireland, disappeared for a while and came back with a track accompanied with an acoustic guitar and a mouth organ. That was the final break from his schooldays. From this time, I remember a solo-gig at a small café in a basement, all his school friends were gathered, his father was there, and the sound was unfamiliar to everyone's ears. Berlin was not ready yet.

He went shortly to university in Berlin, but even then he was hardly to catch at Humboldt, and then he disappeared again. When Max came back this time, he had worked out a way to sing the songs he loved and to deliver them properly to the audience, called himself Max Prosa and suddenly was an artist with a bag full of songs.

He had undergone loads of different schoolings, one of them was the Pop-Akademie (together with the band Jona:S for example), which had a "graduation" concert at Kesselhaus Berlin - and it rocked, the capital city was prepared now!

Following his steps to small cafés, bars and also big halls, famous venues like b-flat, Kesselhaus, I was able to observe and be part of the many different moments of Max Prosa - Max Prosa the artist, unplugged with support from Clueso's guitar player on a small café stage, Max Prosa, the band, that made a whole crowd of people either to stand in awe at the performance or dance and scream at a concert hall.

"No, no, Tasunoro we are not lost / it's just yet a long way left.
And wenn I see a colour my brother, I will let you know.
Now let's go, not stand, because the spirit of time / is still behind us and I want it to stay like that.
I know it's thundering,  lightning and cracking, / but that's where we woke up."
(From: Tasunoro)

His lyrics are poems, amazing poems. Even though one might think that according to his young age, it might be just another 0815 love-kitsch or slipslop of a teenager, that is not the case. Max composes lines that move your heart. His lyrics depict like life as it is, put into just a few words. The naivity of his songs make the lyrics so real. As if it is one passage of your own mind, your life. You find yourself in his songs, your hopes, your dreams, your sadness and your anger. The whole package.

Some time ago, when we were spontaneously at the concert of The Fray, I suggested him to write in English, to target the international audience. I am glad that he didn't listen to me back then, the world would miss an incredibly gifted German singer/songwriter that is continuing the German music culture, creating a new one.

Max, the gifted boy who finished Abitur at a young age of 17,  who spent a lot of time in the basement bandroom with fellow students from his highschool band Increase. Max, who allowed me to eat up all the white gummy bears at his home. Max who seems to have soaken up all the green shades of Ireland. Max Prosa, former lead singer of highschool bands called Increase / Astronaut. Max, the one who took off alone to earn a living on the streets of Ireland by street music. Max, who stood by his values and carried on with German music. Max, who grew up to a young man. Max, who is now mentioned with Clueso and Dota at the same time. Max, the face of Max Prosa, the band that is, even before their official release of their first album,  already making headlines in the newspapers.

The boy has grown up. And he became a poet. A poet that can sing and play the guitar and enchant the audience with his performance. A singer in a band, that rocks Germany.  His music style in the band now differs a lot to the tracks he produced with his school friends, but when you track them back, you know it was a slow development, ripening in the procedure of singing, texting, composing music. And the good thing is that he doesn't stop. He is developing day by day.

Voilà, so pleased to introduce him to you:

15.03.2011

Where are you right now?
At Zughafen in Erfurt, my second home next to Berlin.

by zughafen.de

What are you doing at the moment?
Sitting in the office, was practicing for the club tour with Clueso, where we are playing in a slightly different setup, with suitcases as drums, started early, this is why I am a bit tired now. It's 15:47, next to me is a palm standing, someone is talking about some orchestre, music is running in the background, so low, you can't recognize what is playing. People come and go, laugh, mumble.

Your Soundtrack of your life currently, reason...?
Miles, Kind of Blue.

Max Prosa, it is your stage name and your band name. Who came up with it?
People ask me all the time about it. You can't chose a name, that applies to this one as well. One day, I just woke up and the name was in my head and just suited. I don't want to issue a statement or something, it is just a name.
Max Prosa (artist) : Max Prosa (band)

How would you describe your music?
Lyrical folk, other worlds.
Lyrischer Folk, andere Welten.

"And as the storm was over, I saw her again, the sun.
And it could have worked out with us, you know.".

It is quite a different style from the style of your school band Increase and also the follow-up Astronaut... How come? Are you sick of the old styles?
I never gave a serious thought about it. I always thought it was kinda silly, the talks about sound. The way we play it now and how it is recorded on the CD, that is exactly the way how it fells right for us and for me. In the past, it was different, I heard differently and thought differently.

Do you prefer being alone on the stage, just with an accoustic guitar, or with the whole team of the Band Max Prosa?
Solo-concerts are always more difficult. Nobody catches you, you have to be present all the time a hundred percent. On the other hand, that is what makes out the special charm of it. An incredible intimacy, what a band doesn't have. You are more fragile. I am very happy I can do both, wouldn't miss one of them.

Could you please introduce the band members - who is supporting you on stage?
Yes, sure, in the actual live-band, there is:
Philipp - my flatmate and incredible instrumental talent. Philipp - the orchestre. He is coming from Allgäu, lived a long time in Mannheim before we ended up by coincidences in one flat. Live, he is playing mainly the guitar and the cello.
Stefan - I met him at the SAGO-School for Music and Poetry. He is writing his own awesome songs as well, has a solo-project going on, is currently living in Mannheim. Stefan is playing everything in the band that has keys.
Erez - he is from Israel, is living in Berlin for one and a half years now, has played in loads of avantgarde-bands and experienced crazy stories. Nothing can get him out of balance, he keeps everything together. He is playing the bass, he does not really get the lyrics, but he always gets the feeling.
Joda - also from Allgäu origin, is living in Mannheim now, musicwise from an entirely different direction, and has found his way to folk with us. He is drummer and for me, he is incorporating Sturm und Drang in this rhythm-group, which is balanced by Erez.
"The band members: Philipp, Stefan, Erez, Joda"
Spielt Bass, versteht die Texte nicht wirklich but he always got the feeling.

"If your heart ain't rock sugar, it must be marble stone."
Compared to a couple of years ago, you have improved a lot of your singing techniques. How much have you been practicing in the studio etc.?
I have never been practicing a lot. I just sang a whole lot. Played blues on the piano and sang. Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonesome House Blues. It really feels awesome, every time when it starts, "If your heart ain't rock sugar, it must be marble stone." You can go on for hours and hours, it's never getting boring.
Before that, I took a great deal of singing lessons, but most of the music-pedagogues were in a completely different world: "If you keep on like this, you will not have any voice in ten years." And then they did some excercises with me, to strengthen some muscles that move the voice box.
That didn't help me on. To see it all rationally. To know and thus to control how a tone is created. That is seizing all the magic. It's like to say being in love is just a chemical reaction in your brain. I don't want to live in such a world.
One day, some old rock'n'roller, who really experienced a lot, told me in a bar in Neukölln: "It doesn't matter what people tell you, there is no big singer who cannot really sing blues. So that your hair is standing on end." Then I went to the library, lended three books with blues collections. You need two keys plus bass tone. That did it for me. Others find their own ways.
"It's like to say being in love is just a chemical reaction in your brain. I don't want to live in such a world."
Geübt hab ich nie viel. Ich hab dann einfach wahnsinnig viel gesungen. Blues auf dem Klavier gespielt und gesungen. Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonesome House Blues. If your heart ain't rock sugar, it must be marble stone."
2 Tasten braucht man plus Basston. Das war’s für mich. Andere finden ihre eigenen Wege.

How does your day look like?
That really depends. I am a night person, never go to be before 2am. Before 3pm, I can't do anything creative. That has nothing to do with laziness, it just doesn't work.

"And we are sitting in the sun and listen to Radio Resistance,
dancing wild dances on the balustrade of the balcony,
and no cheerless thought ever had a chance,
on Radio Resistance"
(From: Radio Resistance)

Everything you write sounds like a poem. When do you write your lyrics? Are you constantly writing your words down or are you pausing at this time due to your tour and the release?

You know this is my debut album, I tried to write down everything I could for two years. You can't write all the time. It's like sitting under a tree and reach out with your hand in the right moment, when you hear the apple whirring, that is a picture of SAGO School and describes it pretty well.
Then you got a beginning, not yet a song. Like a seed that you plant into the soil. Then you've got to take care of it. That is always a different progress. Sometimes, it takes a couple of hours, sometimes months. Sometimes, you need to distance yourself from it. These are all (my) experiences.
But this start is the most important thing. And you never know when it is coming, you always have to be watchful, when you read, when you dream.
The music always arrives later, it is more flexible, more adjustable, feels like it for me.
"It's like sitting under a tree and reach out with your hand in the right moment, when you hear the apple whirring"
Manchmal muss man Abstand nehmen.

Do you actually write your songs on paper, or is the book you are holding during the show just an accessory?

Yes, that is what I am doing all the time, except when there is really no paper at hand. A computer carries the atmosphere of the light of McDonald's. At the tops, it could be the means to an end. Other people can barely read my handwriting, for that it is okay then.
Furthermore, the distraction when you sit in front of a computer. The brain is processing everything with it. Music, mail, chat and so forth. A piece of paper and a pen are easier.
And the text is really standing in that book. In the beginning, it was mere pragmatical, so much text without a rhyme, I coudn't memorize it at once. Now I don't feel complete singing the song when the book is missing, it just belongs to it.

"A computer carries the atmosphere of the light of McDonald's"

Where do you get your inspirations from?
A lot through reading and dreaming. To monitor your dreams can be the most inspiring moments. Those are pictographic structures of desires, fears, aspirations. That is exactly what a good text embodies. And this is presented to you several hours a day. You just have to grab it, but it's not an easy task. A book is something similar. You experience the inner life of someone else, the imaginary figure of the author. Movies are a bit trickier. There you merely observe and you experience it nevertheless out of your own reality-perspective.
"reading and dreaming"

Do you have a message delivered through your music?
No, it's not about statements. I would never want to write a political song either. What I produce is entertainment, but not in the negative way, like everyone is using the term nowadays, rather feeling good, euphoria, like this. Rather smal than big, rather interpersonal than proclaiming.

"it's not about statements"

You just joined Zughafen and are touring Germany as support of Clueso. How come you joined him?
It all ran over Andie Welskop, the manager of Clueso and the head of the whole Zughafen. I sent him my stuff by coincidences, was looking for a management agency. Shortly after, I was in Erfurt for the first time.
He took me to Clueso's studio and there I was standing. Clueso said: "Hey, I'm Thomas, if you want, I will show you the place. This is the studio, this is the bathroom, here is the kitchen."

You finished the German Gymnasium with an Abitur at the age of 17. Now you are 21, a few concerts richer and doing music for a living. Do you regret having dropped out of university?
No, I never regretted that, because I realizes quite early, that it is not the real thing for me. I never felt at ease there, maybe because I knew that I wanted something else actually.
So I quit and continued my education on my own. If you want, that is studying as well, that's how I saw it all the time.
I never wanted to play safe, I was repugnant to be a half-day artist. Just because it's cool to play concerts and for the image, but smartly having a degree in the backhand. Of course, it wasn't always easy, especially regarding my conservative family.
But it really was good to find my own way, the blueprint of an artist did not exist in my head for a long time. Until I left my well sheltered Charlottenburg and went to Neukölln, suddenly, it felt like freedom.
"I left my well sheltered Charlottenburg and went to Neukölln, suddenly, it felt like freedom."

"Every time, I told him he should go now.
But it looks like,
he will not understand me."
(From: Straße nach Peru)

What will your ideal future look like?
I am hardly ever thinking about it. I am drifting like a sailing boat in the wind and have the confidence that I will land on both feet with that what I do. Maybe that is the reason why everything worked out so far. Anybody who is looking for the ideal future is doing something else.
"I am drifting like a sailing boat in the wind and have the confidence that I will land on both feet with that what I do."

Please tell us something about your current / past projects.
We recorded an album, play as support act with Clueso on his tour. On the album, there's going to be a song with Dota as well.
We are playing in different constellations, as duo, as band, with string instruments. It will be like this in the future, keeping the whole thing alive.

When is the release date of the lately finished album?
The actual date is not clear yet, but it is definitely going to be this summer, between June and August.
"Album release between June and August"

Your favourite track of the album?
Hard to say, because I have no distance, at this moment, I would say "Im Stillen(*In the silence)," it summarizes a lot for me. "In the silence I am yours."
"In the silence I am yours."

Collaborations you look forward to? With whom do you want to be on stage the most?
It will just happen, if I look back on the past two years, nothing ever happened as I thought and this will never change. I am always open for all kinds of influences and ideas, but I have stopped making plans and set concrete goals, at least regarding these kinds of things.

Where do you see yourself in 2015? 2020?
Opening concert on the moon station. We are the openers. Erez and Joda are playing the first beats of "Schöner Tag." And "Alles ist gut".

Favourite 3 tracks of all times?
Bob Dylan- Visions of Johanna
Tom Waits- Dirt in the ground
Talking Heads- This must be the place (Tiny Melody)

What did you read lately? Do you have time for that at all? Can you recommend a book or a mag?
In my opinion, every person has time to read, at least in our Western world. And that is a big present.
It is really a false conclusion that you have to buy ipads to upload books on, so you have something to read in the train.
But back to the books: My last book was "The Human Stain" by Philipp Roth. It is really an amazing story.
My favourite book is "The Famished Road" by Ben Okri. It is out of print, as far as I know. But maybe you can still find a copy somewhere.
"every person has time to read, at least in our Western world. And that is a big present"

What makes you happy the most at the moment?
Luckily, still the feeling I get when I produce/listen to music, which makes you forget the time. To wake up from it and to think, maybe the world is not the way you thought it to be.
"maybe the world is not the way you thought it to be"

"Then you said we are icons of a long forgotten time.
And it's good that we found each other, so at least there are two of us. And not alone.
We still are icons, of a wonderful time.
And you say it will come, and until then we are two and not alone."
(From: Ikonen)

A last word?
Keep a good head and always carry a light bulb. (Bob Dylan)

THANKS SO MUCH, MAX, LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR ALBUM!

with bare feet on the roads of this world"
