Oh, these Bavarians, they are invading Berlin! Munk and Ben Mono, Nhan Solo and so many more... And they are quite skilled in playing music: as the guys from DabblTrabbl set a perfect example.
Not only do they deliver funky music, running a fashion label and doing grafitti work for major locations, they are running currently a poop-up beer garden Bavarian-style as well: brot & zeit, and they serve fantastic German meals!!!
Recently, DabblTrabbl were invited to play at the Inner-Circle Party, for which Falk flew in from Munich to play alongside Laurin. Hadn't seen the guys together for a while (actually since Kastanienallee festival) and was really looking forward to them playing together. For those who were there and of course those who missed them playing: they recorded a mix for stylistberlin, so enjoy the tunes while reading!!!
Interview: DabblTrabbl (Munich)
stylistberlin: Hey guys, what are you up to right now?
Laurin: Right now I am chillin at our studio in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg – alone as amatter of fact – as usual. Listening to some oldschool rap records and getting inspired.
Falk: I´m waiting for the gang to come over, to drink some whisky, smoke some cigars and earn some money while playing poker.
stylistberlin: Please describe „DabblTrabbl“ to the readers in just three words.
Falk: True Soul Brothers
Laurin: MASSIVE – LOUD – INFECTIOUS
stylistberlin: What's the history of DabblTrabbl? When did you start to be professional Djs as a team? There are rumours you didn't start in the house scene where we meet you nowadays...
Falk: I think it should be 10 years ago now, when we played the first hip hop set together.
We know each other from grade one in elementary school, but we had a long break for about 8 years after fourth grade where we didn´t really see each other since we were going to different schools. But when we met again we obviously knew we had to play some music togehter.
we both started back in the 90ies, collecting hip hop or should i say underground oldschool rap vinyls. ;) at 2001 it seemed like we needed to start DOUBLE TROUBLE as a dj team (Double Trouble was our name in the past before it transforemd a bit like ourselves)
Laurin: Yes it is true that our djing careers go back to the good old 90´s. we both started off playing only hip hop vinyl. I myself got started during a one year stay in the us 1999. When it seemed super easy for me to have access to all the rap music I was listening to at that time. Coming from a small town in germany it was very difficult to get your hands on some good us quality vinyl, since online mailorder shops for records were not as big in germany as they are today and I had to travel almost 100km to the next record shop.
stylistberlin: What can people expect from your sets now?
Laurin: I would say you can definatly still here were we come from, lestening to our our sets. There is a lot of soul and funk in the sound we play. Plus we both like old rap vocals on punchi house tunes. Our sound usually does not get too minimal or deep I would say. Flava in ya ear!!!
There has been quite a lot of very good releases lately that we really appreciate and that more or less represent our style of music and mixing. Releases on record labels such as made to play, exploited, klasse recordings, dirtybird.
Falk: Bass, Soul, more Bass, Rhythm, Housemusic and even more Bass
stylistberlin: What/who is your biggest influence, when it comes to music?
Falk: Notorious BIG
Laurin: I guess in some way it is my dad, or maybe even my family overall. This does not mean that i come from a family of musicians, but there were always a lot of different styles of music played at our house when i grew up.
I remember being at some birthday party in augsburg when I was about 13 or 14 years old, for me that was the first time I saw a real dj playing with two turntables and a mixer. I actually got the „kids bonus“ and was allowed to stand beside him and press some buttons which I didn´t know what the were there for. I guess After that night i knew that i wanted to be a dj too!
stylistberlin: Favourite three tracks on your playlist currently?
Falk:
Love Recycled – Solomun
Look at me – Lil Scrappy Justin Martin Remix
Jelly Jazz – Camel Mr. Ho Remix
Laurin:
Homework – rally racquet club
Julio bashmore – middle for you
Justin martin & sammy d – dressed to grill
Sasha robotti - move
stylistberlin: Where do you get inspirations for your music from?
Laurin: My inspiration comes mostly from other music i hear or listen to I would say. There are a lot of good samples out there that have not been used yet and could be used in many interesting ways. I have been listening to a lot of traditional old african and south american music for the last few weeks for example on the search for good samples. It is very difficult to find your own style of producing , that is basically also what I want to keep working on in the future, kind of finding my own handwriting in the music I produce.
Falk: Clubbing, Internet
stylistberlin: Artists you played with so far?
Laurin: dj dsl, waxolutionists, dj hype, aggro berlin, lady waks, leroy thornhill, boogie army, Malente, lars moston, robosonic, round table knights, david keno, riva starr,...
Falk: ... Sascha Sibler, Tim Turbo
stylistberlin: Laptop or vinyls?
Laurin: Both actually, i would definatly consider myself a vinyl lover. We just started using traktor scratch though at the end of last year. To be honest I would rather play vinyl only, but there are a lot of digital releases and promos that we can not get on vinyl. At the same time there are vinyl only releases.... not many but a few.
The biggest benefit for me using a digital djing system so far is, how much easyier everything gets when it comes to travelling and of course the quick access to almost all our music.
Falk: Traktor Scratch
stylistberlin: Where did you play in Berlin so far? Where do you want to play?
Laurin: We actually have not being playing berlin so much yet and would love to play a lot more. So far we have appeared at cookies, sage beach, and some independent private parties mostly in shops or off locations.
Falk: We didn´t play that much in Berlin so far just a few club shows. Ritter Butzke or horst kreuzberg would be nice.
stylistberlin: Collaborations with other artists you are looking forward to:
Falk: Hopefully our buddies from Robosonic! BIG UP!
Laurin: We are always open to work with other artists. Also looking forward to some remix work coming up. Of course our goal is to collaborate with other people from the hood. There is a lot of good cats out there. People we can definitely learn from.
stylistberlin: Laurin, you are living in Berlin, Falk, you are living in Munich. How does that work?
Laurin: Since we are both not djing or producing music for a living, being sepperated in different cities makes working together quite difficult a lot of times. We try to manage our work and djing activities so we see each other as much as possible. Concerning the studio work you should better ask Falk.... ;)
Falk: Well we try to meet twice a month to get some time in our studio and play some dj sets.
stylistberlin: When can we expect to hear something new produced by DabblTrabbl?
Laurin: We have three tracks currently that we are working on and about to finish up, so hopefully we will see the Dabbltrabbl „1st 10th anniversary EP“ release in autumn.
Falk: SOON hopefully, looking at the end of next month.
Falk: SOON hopefully, looking at the end of next month.
stylistberlin: You are working a lot in the fashion business. Lately, the DABBLTRABBL "BEAT IT" shirt was featured in the video above. How come?
Falk: Because I used to organize events for Levi´s and Laurin used to work for ic! berlin for the past years.
Laurin: I was working in marketing jobs in the fashion industry in Berlin fort he past few years and am somehow connected with brands and people I know through that job. That's why we get to play at fashion shows during the fashion week in Berlin for example.
We also have our own small t-shirt collection consisting of two t-shirts. ;) That of course makes it interesting to play at shops and presenting our line there as well.
stylistberlin: What are your plans for the upcoming time?
Laurin: Time is relative!!! i hope we find more time this year to play some shows and to get our production work and skills up. Other than that I want to keep doing what I am doing.
Falk: Getting more into Producing, and working on our skills.
stylistberlin: A last word?
Falk: Liaba bsuffa und lusdig, ois niachdan und bläd.*
* Better drunken and funny, than sober and stupid
* Better drunken and funny, than sober and stupid
Laurin: Thanks for the interview and for hosting us at „inner circle“

... BONUS: DabblTrabbl Biography in German:
DABBLTRABBL existiert jetzt seit fast 10 Jahren.
Keep your ears wide open for some funky fresh Sound!
